MIP Fighting the Unknown continues the tradition of the cross-cultural Memphis in Poland Festival which began in 2017 by the cities of Memphis, TN, Sopot and Gdańsk in Poland.  Memphis and Sopot, with its neighboring Gdańsk, have much in common culturally. They played major roles in the fight for human and civil rights in the two countries. We want to develop a strong Polish-American partnership providing educational and cultural exchange especially for the young generation.

Last year a new project was initiated which aims at organizing a youth exchange program between the high-school students of Sopot, Gdańsk and Gdynia. the Tri-Cities in Poland and the students of Greater Memphis.  This initiative is sponsored by the City Halls of Sopot, Gdańsk and Gdynia, by the Rotary International Districts in Poland and in the U.S.

2022 FIGHTING THE UNKNOWN Contest WiNNERS

Over one hundred high-school students in the Tri-Cities took part in the competition who submitted over forty artistic works and essays. This truly exceeded our expectations! The Organizing Committee of the “MIP-Fighting the Unknown” contest stand in admiration of the talent of the young contestants, of the beautiful and creative presentations of their feelings, experiences, and thoughts. The jury of the "Fighting the Unknown" competition included the co-creators of the song "Fighting the Unknown", which was written especially for this project to inspire the young people in their work. The jurors are (in alphabetical order): Marcin Arendt, Rebecca Arendt, Jacek Dutkiewicz, Ryszard Schnepf and Magdalena Vaughan. The selection the best artistic creations and essays was an extremely difficult task because the level of submissions was high!

The prize for winning the "Fighting the Unknown" competition is a visit to Memphis between September 17th and 24th this year (2022). This trip will be sponsored by the authorities of Sopot, Gdynia and Gdańsk, and by the American and Polish Rotary International Districts.
